Why Edible Landscaping for Families in Need?

Fresh fruits and vegetables are the most difficult to access on food assistance due to their high cost, leading to unhealthy food choices and health problems. This low cost, low work program is modeled on Permaculture’s ecologically based guild concept to minimize work and brings fresh fruits and vegetables directly to people’s yards while increasing aesthetic beauty. This is a great strategy to build food resilience in our most needy communities for a small upfront cost that will give for many years to come.

Plant Choices:

We offer Home Owners the choice of picking one of each from our selection of 3 pre-selected fruit trees, berry bushes and then 2 support plants from our selection of 6 support plants and 2 perennial vegetables from our list of 3 perennial vegetables for a a total of 6 plants that will make up a guild for their yard. The support plants serve many functions, primarily to keep the fruit trees and berry bushes healthy but can also serve as herbs for cooking or to beautify the yard as well. We will install it for them as well and give them guidance in how to maintain it over the years and how to harvest and eat it.

Cost:

For your donation of $250 it will cover the full cost for one family to receive one of these installations in their yard. However, any amount will help us build towards that $250 cost per family, so please donate what you can and help us build healthy food access to those in need for generations to come!
